What began as a simple idea, a rest stop along the Elfstedentocht route, became our Tolhuisje by the Zwette: a small place with a big heart, open to everyone who needs a pause.
Where travelers take a break
Because our home is located at a junction along the famous Elfstedentocht route, someone once suggested we start a small rest stop. We loved that idea, a place on our yard where travellers can pause, have a cup of coffee, and take a moment to breathe. I always liked the thought of a tea garden, but I could never just interrupt my work to make coffee or tea. So this became the perfect solution: most visitors know they can make their own coffee, which keeps it relaxed, for them, and for us. Our rest stop is simple: coffee, tea, lemonade, broth, and sometimes a granola bar. The cups and glasses all come from the local thrift store.
One of the requirements for an official rest point is to have a toilet available. We thought that was both logical and kind, so that everyone (even walkers from town) can pause here for a break and a bit of rest. There’s always something to read, and our place is also an official stamping post for the Elfstedentocht. The stamps are available even when the rest stop is closed. I still find it special how easily people feel at home here, how they eat their sandwiches, pour some water, make coffee or tea, and simply take the time to rest. Everyone is welcome.
We’re open from May through September, depending on our presence. Would you like to know more? Click the link below to visit our website.
